West University Place – May 17, 2023– The City of West University Place generously hosted the 2023 Star Citizens Awards and Friends Appreciation Luncheon on May 17, 2023. The awards recipients were the 2021 and 2022 Fathers & Flashlights Co-Chairs Katie and Chris Hill and Sarah and Mark Knysh. The two events together netted $206,000. Star Citizen Awards were also presented to the 2023 Park Lovers’ Ball CoChairs Whitney and Marc Walsh and Mitra and Josh Woody. The annual gala netted $300,000 for West U parks.
Mayor Susan Sample presented the awards to the proud recipients. Mayor Pro Tem John Montgomery, Councilwoman Shannon Carroll and City Manager Dave Beach also attended the awards luncheon at Adair Kitchen as well as Susan White, Parks and Recreation Director, Donna LaMond, Executive Director of Friends, Sami Morrison, Friends Chair and members of the Friends Board and Advisory Board.
Proceeds raised from these events due to the efforts of these Star Citizens are managed by the Friends of West University Parks Fund and are dedicated to funding park improvements such as the most recent projects including Judson Park Improvements, the Colonial Park Challenge Course and Huffington Park. The Friends of West University Parks Fund is a volunteer based 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to raising funds for the renovation, expansion, development and improvement of parks and green spaces in the neighborhood parks of the City of West University Place. The board is appointed by City Council and raises money through foundation grants, citizens’ bequests, memorials, special events and various other programs and events including partnerships with local businesses.
